Baking of cakes has a long tradition, dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome – but the cakes first appeared only in the late 16th century, in Central Europe. At the end of this period, the oldest known cakes were created; Schwarzwald and Linzer.

From the 18th century, cakes entered the modern age. It was served at various ceremonies, but exclusively for houses of rich aristocracy. In the 19th century, when white flour and sugar became cheaper – they became available to a wider population.
